Sir George Dyson was Director of Music at the Royal Naval College in Osborne, before moving to Marlborough College in 1911. He joined the Royal Fusiliers in January 1915 and published a widely used training pamphlet on grenade warfare after finding there were no official guides available. Posted to the French frontline, he endured the difficult conditions of the trenches, yet composed a set of piano miniatures, including the Epigrams (1916, published 1920), during quieter moments.
