by Paul Vincze
This medal was produced to mark Lord Samuel’s 90th birthday. It is inscribed, ‘HERBERT VISCOUNT SAMUEL O.M.’ (Order of Merit, an honour bestowed on Samuel in 1958). The reverse shows a figure, perhaps of Truth, writing in a book and holding a beacon, with the inscription, ‘AMICVS SOCRATES SED MAGIS AMICA VERITAS’ (Socrates is my friend but a greater friend is truth), from Roger Bacon’s Opus Majus, and indirectly from Aristotle. Vincze had previously portrayed Lord Samuel in a portrait plaque exhibited in 1943.
