Born into a banking family, Grote devoted himself to scholarship and radical politics and was a follower of the Utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham. Between 1826 and 1830, he was one of the promoters of the new University College London for Dissenters who were not members of the Church of England. After the Reform Bill of 1832, Grote was inspired to stand for Parliament and won a seat in the first reformed House of Commons.
