George Barker was educated in London and, although he left school aged fourteen, he was determined to become a writer. His first job was for the editor John Middleton Murry who gave Barker work as a reviewer and introduced him to the bohemian circle of 1930s writers. He contributed to the radical journal Twentieth Century and published his first book Thirty Preliminary Poems (1933) at the age of twenty.
