Anna Maria van Schurman NPG D43045
© National Portrait Gallery, London
by Cornelis van Dalen the Younger, published by Frederick de Wit, after Cornelius Johnson (Cornelius Janssen van Ceulen)
In 1657, Johnson painted a monochromatic, ‘grisaille’, portrait of Anna Maria (now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington), evidently designed as the model for a print. The print, an engraving, was made by Cornelis van Dalen the Younger; its third state, shown here, includes a verse by poet and diplomat Constantijn Huygens.
