Lady Barlow was a politician and ardent campaigner for women’s rights. Sister of politician Thomas Denman, she married the liberal MP John Emmott Barlow and stood for election herself in the House of Commons in 1922. She came third in the election of 1924 for a seat in Ilkeston, one of just six women out of 333 liberal hopefuls.
