Entering Parliament as a Liberal in 1847, George Cornewall Lewis served as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1855-8), Home Secretary (1859-61) and Secretary of War (1861-3). He was the author of An Essay on the Origin and Formation of the Romance Languages (1835), Enquiry into the Credibility of the Early Roman History (1855) and An Historical Survey of the Astronomy of the Ancients (1862). As editor of the Edinburgh Review from 1852 until 1855 he contributed many articles to the publication.
