Harriet Mill was an early advocate of votes for women. Her views on equality influenced her second husband John Stuart Mill, who went on to present to parliament the first petition demanding votes for women in 1866. Harriet Mill’s newspaper articles on the enfranchisement of women (1851) and domestic violence (1858) were widely read.
