Roger Long combined several roles including astronomer, country vicar and teacher. He lived most of his life in Cambridge where he was Master of Pembroke College from 1734 to 1770, and First Professor of Astronomy and Geometry from 1750. He arranged for a planetarium to be built in the grounds of Pembroke College. Holding 30 people with a rotating sphere measuring 18 feet (approximately 6 meters) in diameter, it was used to view the stars and constellations.
